This is a bluegrass gospel song that reaches back to my two near-death experiences at Vanderbilt in 2022. I’m still trying to understand what happened and where I was. I didn’t smell any smoke, so there’s that.
The song carries those questions and the hope of returning someday, when it’s my time. Again.
Lyrics
I was walkin' through shadows
With my head hung down
Feet down in the dust
Heart on the ground
Then I heard Him callin'
Through the cold dark night
Sayin' child, keep walkin'
There's a higher place in sight
Take me to the mountain high
Where the hallelujahs ring
Where the weary find their strength
And the saved souls sing
I was in the valley low
Till His mercy set me free
Now take me to the mountain high
Where His grace will carry me
I ain't scared of valleys
Like I used to be
There's a hand on my shoulder
And a light I can see
Every stone I stumbled on
Every tear I cried
Turned into a step
Up the mountainside
Take me to the mountain high
Where the hallelujahs ring
Where the weary find their strength
And the saved souls sing
I was in the valley low
Till His mercy set me free
Now take me to the mountain high
Where His grace will carry me
On that open-heart table
I slipped past pain
Doctors sounded distant
Like thunder in the rain
Then the Lord said, not yet
Not yet, my son
There's more road you gotta see
More race to run
So He sent me back breathin'
With a song inside of me
Now take me to the mountain high
Where His grace will carry me
Take me to the mountain high
Where the hallelujahs ring
Where the weary find their strength
And the saved souls sing
I was in the valley low
Till His mercy set me free
Now take me to the mountain high
Where His grace will carry me
Take me to the mountain high
Where His grace will carry me
