I’ve always wondered whether any single religion has the whole story. This song explores the possibility that each of us holds a little piece of something bigger than any one of us can understand.
I want people to think realistically about how much any of us can truly know. The quilt is a way of asking what we might discover if we brought our pieces together and left room for what somebody else might see.
Lyrics
I used to think that truth was something
Somebody surely had to know
That somewhere there was one right answer
One narrow road that we could follow
But the older I get the more I wonder
If any of us sees that far
Maybe we're holding little pieces
Of something bigger than we are
What if every soul was given
Just a little piece to hold
A patch of something far too endless
For any human heart to know
What if every faith has glimpsed Him
From the place where they have stood
And all these scraps we swear are different
Belong to something whole and good
Some folks hold their piece up higher
And swear that theirs must be the whole
They tell the rest their piece is lesser
Or wrong because it's not their own
But I wonder if the loudest voices
Might be seeing least of all
If none of us has seen the whole quilt
Who are we to judge one patch at all
What if every soul was given
Just a little piece to hold
A patch of something far too endless
For any human heart to know
What if every faith has glimpsed Him
From the place where they have stood
And all these scraps we swear are different
Belong to something whole and good
Maybe God knew we couldn't carry
All there ever was to see
Maybe mercy gave us pieces
Small enough for you and me
And maybe we were never meant
To prove whose piece was right
Maybe we were meant to stitch them
And see what comes to light
What if every soul was given
Just a little piece to hold
A patch of something far too endless
For any human heart to know
What if every faith has glimpsed Him
From the place where they have stood
And when every piece is gathered
We find the face of God
Maybe none of us can see Him whole
Maybe that's the point of faith
