I wrote this about Haulover Beach in South Florida and the difference between what people imagine goes on there and the ordinary reality of it. Some people hear “nude beach” and their minds go straight to something sordid. What the song shows is people enjoying the beach, talking, laughing, and spending time together.
That’s the heart of it. Sometimes our assumptions say more about us than the place we’re judging.
Lyrics
Down at Haulover where the blue waves roll
Nobody's wearin' nothin' but a little suntan ole'
Old scars, new laughs, every shape and shade
Ain't nobody hidin' what the good Lord made
Some folks drive by actin' shocked and strange
Like freedom's somethin' dirty if it ain't in their range
But the gulls keep flyin' and the tide rolls in
And the sun don't judge the color of your skin
We're just hangin' at Haulover
Where the Atlantic meets the sand
Ain't nobody wearin' nothin'
But a smile and an all over tan
We're all born naked
Everything else is drag
Hangin' at Haulover
Ain't no shame in that
There's a man with a cooler and a big straw hat
Talkin' baseball, dolphins, and where the fish are bitein' at
There's a woman laughin' like she finally got free
And two old lovers holdin' hands by the sea
We're just hangin' at Haulover
Where the Atlantic meets the sand
Ain't nobody wearin' nothin'
But a smile and an all over tan
We're all born naked
Everything else is drag
Hangin' at Haulover
Ain't no shame in that
Leave your labels by the lifeguard stand
Let the waves take what you don't understand
We're just hangin' at Haulover
Where the Atlantic meets the sand
We're all born naked
Everything else is drag
Hangin' at Haulover
Ain't no shame in that
Yeah, everything else is drag
