Every April, Middle Tennessee fills up with buttercups. The ones that catch my eye are growing in the roughest ground, finding a way to bloom where you might not expect much of anything to grow.

I think we’re a lot like that sometimes. We find ways to grow and make something beautiful out of the hard places in our lives. That little flower gave me a way to put it into a song.

Lyrics

I saw you growin' by a fence post
Where the gravel meets the weeds
Little patch of stubborn yeller'
In dirt that will only grow dreams
No garden hand to tend you
No soft and gentle touch
Just a crack of morning sunlight
And the will to rise above

Buttercup
Little golden heart in the dust
Bent by wind but standin' up
Rooted deeper than the rush
You don't preach about survival
You don't holler, you don't fuss
You just bloom where life got broken
Lord, that sounds a lot like us

Storms roll hard through Tennessee
They'll lay a good field down
But you keep your color steady
When the rain comes pourin' round
I've learned strength ain't always thunder
Sometimes courage don't say much
Sometimes God leaves little sermons
In the soul of a buttercup

Buttercup
Little golden heart in the dust
Bent by wind but standin' up
Rooted deeper than the rush
You don't preach about survival
You don't holler, you don't fuss
You just bloom where life got broken
Lord, that sounds a lot like us

So I'll tip my hat and keep walkin'
With a little less weight to carry
Some things don't need rescuin'
They just need a little rain
