I wrote this song about friendship, especially those friends who become family. We don’t choose the family we’re born into, but we do get to choose the people we make room for in our lives. This song is for the ones we come to call our own.

Lyrics

We don't get to pick the blood we come from
Or the house that shaped our name
We don't get to choose the voices
That taught our hearts their pain
Some folks do the best they can
Some break more than they mend
Somewhere down a crooked road
We learn what makes a friend

We're all just human
All a little bruised
All carrying stories
We did not get to choose
But thank God for the hands that hold us
When the hard times pull us through
We can't choose the blood we come from
But thank God for the ones we choose

We've all said things we shouldn't
We've all held hurt too long
We've all needed someone near us
When we couldn't be that strong
Some friends know your silence
Before you say a word
They hear the prayer beneath the pain
That no one else has heard

We're all just human
All a little bruised
All carrying stories
We did not get to choose
But thank God for the hands that hold us
When the hard times pull us through
We can't choose the blood we come from
But thank God for the ones we choose

Blood can give you history
But love can give you home
Grace can find a wounded heart
And tell it, "You're not alone"

We can't choose the blood we come from
But thank God for the ones we choose
