I wrote this song about my sons and the love that stays as our children grow into lives of their own. The years change how they need us, but they don’t change what being their dad means.

The song follows that love from their first hello into adulthood. Love changes shape, makes room, and learns to let go without ever really letting go. That’s what I wanted my boys to hear in it.

Lyrics

They came to me in different seasons
Years between their first hello
But each one changed the man I was
In ways only fathers know
Two little lives two sacred names
Two blessings heaven gave
I didn't know how love could grow
Till I gave each one his name

No matter how old they get
My heart still lights up
When I see their faces
Or their names light up my phone
Years can change the boys I knew
Life can pull them far from home
But they're still the names I whispered first
Forever carved into my soul
No matter how old they get
My heart still lights up

Now they've got homes I don't live in
Front porch lights I don't turn on
Little shoes beside their doorways
Bedtime stories carrying on
Little voices call them "Daddy" now
Just like they once called me
Every time they call me "Dad"
That's who I'll always be

I've learned love changes shape with time
It loosens up but won't let go
They don't need me like they used to
But I still need them to know

No matter how old they get
My heart still lights up
When I see their faces
Or their names light up my phone
Years can change the boys I knew
Life can pull them far from home
But they're still the names I whispered first
Forever carved into my soul
No matter how old they get
My heart still lights up
