From the recording Six O’Clock Shadow
I wrote “Six O’Clock Shadow” after the death warrant was signed in a case I helped investigate thirty years ago. I knew the work we did was right, but I still found myself wrestling with the fact that something I had done in service of justice had become part of the chain that ended with another human being’s execution.
The song came out of that moral reckoning. Responsibility. Consequence. Justice. Mercy. And finally understanding where my own role ended. I wasn’t the executioner. I was part of the guardrail that helped stop him from harming anyone else.
Musically, I wanted it dark and Southern, but not hopeless. A steady country pulse, tremolo guitar, steel, fiddle, and enough space for the words to carry the weight.
The clock can stop a heartbeat, but it can’t erase the shadow left behind.
Lyrics
Black and white, cut and dried
Follow the facts where the dead couldn’t testify
Thirty years later, the warrant came due
Now Six o'clock is waitin' on me too
I ain’t questionin' guilt, that was settled back then
I’m thinking ’bout the lives that never came whole again
Some men leave love on the road that they take
You left death and destruction rollin' in your wake
Six o’clock shadow
Stretchin’ down old Forty-One
Through the pines and the palmettos
Where so much damage was done
The clock can stop a heartbeat
But it can’t put back what you took
And it can’t erase the dark shadow
You left on the world
You left on the world
Polaroid film and clothesline
Blue paint and one who survived
Little pieces told the story
For the ones who couldn’t testify
We didn’t build that case on hatred
We put every fact where it belonged
And I can live with the work that I did
It’s the weight that keeps hangin' on me
Six o’clock shadow
Old Hog Trail runs through my mind
Past the man who lived to tell us
And the ones we couldn’t save in time
The clock can stop a heartbeat
It can close that final door
But it can’t erase the dark shadow
You left on the world
I don’t wonder if we got it right
That ain’t what keeps me up tonight
A boat can disappear from sight
And leave the water rollin' wide
Six o’clock can end a lifetime
But it can’t calm your wake behind
Some things stop when a heartbeat does
Some keep moving through our lives
No victory song
No glass held high
Just six o’clock
And thirty years gone by
The clock can stop a heartbeat
But there’s one thing it can’t do
It can’t erase the dark shadow
This world carries after you
